Building a Fort As a University Student, you would think I use my time wisely, recognising that when I have an appointment at 8:30 in the morning, going to bed at 3am isn’t the brightest plan. Well, being a University Student, I successfully managed to stay up till 3 doing nothing. At about 1am, I knew I should go to bed, so I was about too, then me, and the Matt’s got talking, already not a great sign. We started making suggestions of crazy things we could do in the moment, then it came, I suggested we made a fort! Now, if this had just been me and Matt Crosse, it would have been different. The likelihood being we would have laughed at the suggestion, then gone to bed. However, this was me, Matt Crosse and Matt Hazzard. Now Hazzard likes to carry through with stupid suggestions.
So sure enough, after many smiles and giggles, we grabbed our duvets, random wooden objects, such as sticks, planks of wood, the odd chair, and rampaged to the living room. We moved sofas, used ironing boards in ways never thought possible, discovered new uses for our English course books, and then it was complete!
The fort stood a grand total of about 3 ft off the ground, complete with three “apparent” entrances, one of which doubled as a gun turret. Yes, this was the epitome of stupid. Yes it was totally pointless. And Yes, it was a lot of fun! We attempted to play the Gamecube within the fought,
however discovered that not everyone could see the screen to have a proper view of the chaos that was now ensuing on screen. After a few minutes of admiring our handy work, we decided the idea of sleeping in the fought wasn’t such a good idea. It was cramp, impossible to stick legs out, and just wasn’t a great idea.
It also was more of a Tent in its design, and bits were starting to collapse. Has Crossey pushed his way out of the tent and I attempted to exit via the Turret, it all started to full apart, and come crashing up. The dream was over. And we laughed. There is something incredibly fun about just forgetting who you are for a moment and becoming a boy again. (me in my fort above!) Something built deep into the heart of man, that boyhood instinct. For a moment, nothing else in the world matter apart from building the fought. There was no real purpose to it, no excuse needed, just built simply for fun. Sometimes, a man needs to escape his world. Often many things of the world, from alcohol to sex, to parties, indulge this. We want to forget, to forget the world we live in for a moment, and just be. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that every man should build a fort, however it is incredibly fun to return to your childhood when everything suddenly becomes so simple, and looking through the eyes of a child the world seems incredibly small and special. Even decisions become simpler, and everything is simpler. Sometimes we over complicate things, yet Jesus says "become like a Child", because a Child just believes and follows. Simple as that.
